Head & Neck Massage that actually resolves what's bothering you.
What it is
A 30-minute treatment of the scalp, temples, occiput, full neck and upper shoulders. Pressure-point work, gentle cervical traction and slow scalp massage combine to release the muscles that drive most tension headaches.
Who it's for
Headache sufferers, screen workers, parents of newborns, students in exam season, jaw-clenchers, grinders, and anyone whose tension lives from the shoulders upwards. Clients with diagnosed migraine often book this in the prodrome window to interrupt a building attack.
When you need it
At the first sign of a building tension headache. After a heavy week of screens. The evening before a long drive. The morning after a poor night's sleep. As a monthly preventative if headaches have become routine.
Why professional matters
Most tension headaches are referred pain from a tight upper trapezius, suboccipital muscles and temporalis. Hands trained to find those drivers resolve more in 30 minutes than over-the-counter painkillers do in a week — and without the side effects.
Untreated tension doesn't fade. It compounds.
Tension headaches feel like an inevitability — "this is just my life now." They aren't. They are the predictable downstream effect of muscles that have been holding for too long, and they respond to focused work faster than most people expect.
Painkillers become routine
Daily over-the-counter use creates rebound headaches — the medication itself becomes part of the pattern. Resolving the muscular driver is the only way out.
Sleep degrades and mood dips
Chronic head and neck tension elevates baseline nervous-system arousal. Sleep gets lighter, mornings get harder, and patience runs out faster.
Vision and concentration suffer
Suboccipital tension contributes directly to eye strain. Long screen days that already strain the eyes become unbearable when the neck won't let go.
A repeatable system — not a one-size massage.
Symptom check
Where does the headache sit? When did it start? Has anything triggered it? One-minute scan that informs the entire session.
Set up
Couch in your quietest room, face-cradle ready, low light if you prefer. About 8 minutes from arrival.
Neck & shoulder release
10 minutes of slow, deep work on the upper trapezius and posterior neck — the most common pain referral source.
Occiput & temporalis
10 minutes of pressure-point work at the base of the skull, around the temples, and through the muscles of the jaw (on request).
Scalp & finish
10 minutes of slow scalp massage to fully switch off the nervous system. We leave you horizontal and quiet.
Concrete outcomes you'll actually feel.
Headache resolves in-session
Most active tension headaches measurably reduce within the 30 minutes — clients often sit up surprised the pain is gone.
Frequency drops with regularity
Monthly sessions shift the baseline. Clients with previously weekly tension headaches commonly report them dropping to one or two a month.
No medication, no side effects
Hands-on work has none of the rebound, liver or stomach side effects of long-term painkiller use.
Targeted £39 treatment
Same therapist standards as the full hour, focused entirely on the head, neck and jaw region. Best value treatment for headache sufferers.
Fits the window before it gets worse
30 minutes is short enough to book at the first warning sign — most clients catch a headache before it escalates to a full attack.
No light, no noise, no commute
When a headache is building, the last thing you want is to drive to a salon. We come to your darkened room instead.
What goes into a proper head & neck massage.
Head and neck work done well treats four overlapping systems — muscular, vascular, lymphatic and nervous. Here's what's happening in each.
Muscles addressed
Upper trapezius (the most-referred headache driver), levator scapulae, sternocleidomastoid, scalenes, all four suboccipital muscles, temporalis at the temples, frontalis across the forehead, and the muscles of mastication (masseter and pterygoids) on request for jaw clenchers.
Techniques used
Pressure-point release, slow sustained compression, gentle cervical traction, cross-fibre friction on chronic adhesions, scalp pressure-point work, and finishing lymphatic strokes down the neck to encourage drainage. We do not perform cervical manipulation.
Variations of the treatment
Migraine-prone focus (lighter pressure, no temple work during an active attack, more scalp and shoulder), jaw-clenching focus (added masseter and pterygoid work on request), and post-screen reset (added temple and frontalis work). Specify your focus when booking.
What it pairs well with
Many clients book this monthly as a standalone treatment, or alternate it with our 60-minute back, scalp & neck for fuller upper-body release. For chronic daily headaches, we often suggest two sessions in the first fortnight to reset, then monthly maintenance.
When to see a doctor instead
Headaches with sudden onset, vision changes, fever, or following a head injury require medical assessment first — we don't treat in those situations. For chronic tension and stress-pattern headaches, this treatment is one of the most effective tools available.
