The Treatment

Back, Scalp & Neck Massage that actually resolves what's bothering you.

What it is

A 60-minute treatment dedicated to the upper back, shoulders, full neck, occiput and scalp. Roughly half the session is back and shoulder work, the remainder neck and scalp. We use deep tissue, trigger-point and gentle traction techniques to release the specific compensations that build up from screens, driving and lifting.

Who it's for

Anyone whose tension lives above the waist — laptop workers, drivers, tradespeople who carry tools on one shoulder, parents lifting young children, and anyone waking up with a tight jaw or tension headaches. Especially effective for clients who feel "a full body massage doesn't spend enough time where it actually hurts."

When you need it

When headaches start by mid-afternoon, when turning your head feels limited, when the area between your shoulder blades is permanently tight, or when you've been told you grind your teeth. Also excellent the evening before a long drive or a heavy week.

Why professional matters

Upper-body tension follows predictable patterns — trapezius locks, neck overworks, scalp tightens, jaw clenches. An untrained pair of hands rubs the surface; a trained therapist works the chain in the right order so the release holds. Celtic Manor sequencing means we don't just chase pain, we resolve why it's there.

What Happens If You Wait

Untreated tension doesn't fade. It compounds.

Upper-body tension is the body's most ignored injury — it isn't acute enough to stop you working, so people live with it for years. Then one cold morning, a small twist puts them out of action for a week.

Headaches become daily

Tension in the upper trapezius and suboccipitals refers pain directly into the temples and behind the eyes. Painkillers become routine; the source is never addressed.

Sleep posture worsens

A neck that can't fully turn changes how you sleep. Pillow piles get bigger, mornings get stiffer, and the cycle accelerates.

Jaw and teeth pay the price

Chronic upper-body tension is one of the largest drivers of jaw clenching and night-time grinding. Dentists will tell you what hands can resolve.

Our Process

A repeatable system — not a one-size massage.

01

Symptom map

Quick walk-through: where it hurts, when it started, what makes it worse. Two minutes; informs the whole hour.

02

Set up around you

Couch positioned with face-cradle, linens warmed, oil selected. About 10 minutes.

03

Back release

30 minutes of layered work — warm, release the superficial layer, then deep-tissue work between the shoulder blades and along the spine.

04

Neck & scalp

Side-lying or prone neck work, gentle traction, suboccipital release, then a 10-minute scalp massage to switch off the nervous system.

05

Reset & advice

Two or three simple between-session moves to keep it released. Pack down quietly while you stay lying.

Why Clients Rebook

Concrete outcomes you'll actually feel.

Headache frequency drops

Most regular clients report tension headaches dropping from daily to occasional within the first 2–3 sessions.

Range of motion returns

Neck rotation, shoulder shrug and overhead reach all measurably improve in a single session — and hold longer with monthly maintenance.

Trained for deep work

Deep tissue is safe in trained hands and harmful in untrained ones. Level 2 & 3 qualifications and clinical-style sequencing protect the structures we work around.

Same price as full body

£55 for 60 minutes — exactly the same as a full-body massage, but spent entirely on the area that's actually bothering you.

Same therapist, every visit

No rotating massage roster. The therapist who learned your knots last month is the one returning this month.

Tomorrow morning is better

Sleep is deeper, neck rotation is fuller, and the head feels lighter the next morning. Most clients book again within 4–6 weeks.

In Depth

What goes into a proper back, scalp & neck massage.

When the brief is upper-body only, the structure of the hour changes completely. Here's how the time is actually spent and which techniques are used where.

Areas covered

Upper, middle and lower trapezius; rhomboids and the interscapular region; erector spinae along the full spine; deltoids; full cervical spine; suboccipital muscles at the base of the skull; temples; scalp; and the muscles of mastication around the jaw (on request).

Techniques used

Swedish warming strokes, deep-tissue compression, trigger-point release on knots, neuromuscular technique on chronic adhesions, gentle cervical traction, friction across grain on stubborn shoulder bands, and finishing scalp pressure-point work.

When we adjust pressure

If you bruise easily, if you've had recent surgery, if you're pregnant, or if you're new to deep tissue work, we calibrate pressure down and build over sessions. Stronger is not better — the goal is release, not pain.

Residential vs corporate

This treatment is most popular as a residential booking. Corporate clients tend to book chair-based 20-minute variants for office wellness days, but the full 60-minute treatment requires a quiet room and a flat couch surface.

Pairing with other treatments

Many clients alternate this monthly with our full-body massage, or pair it with our 30-minute head and neck treatment when tension headaches are flaring. The full body is for everything; this one is when the upper body is shouting loudest.
